Dentistry involves performing different procedures and restorations on a patient's teeth. To ensure treatment's success and avoid complications or issues, each dental restoration must be perfect. However, appropriately performing these procedures requires a lot of practice and dexterous aptitude. Therefore, dentistry students are not allowed to do them on patients until they are ready.
As a result, students learn to make every procedure on typodont teeth to solve this issue. These teeth are made of plastic and mimic authentic teeth. Therefore, they can practice as much as needed until they develop enough skills to perform the procedure safely on real patients.
Typodont teeth are replaceable teeth made of plastic used to practice dental procedures and restorations. They are meant to be placed inside a typodont model.
A typodont is a specialized model made of plastic that simulates a patient's mouth. The typodont can be held freely or placed on top of a table while practicing. However, it can also be placed inside a dummy that simulates the patient's head and torso. This provides a more realistic experience and emulates how it would be to work inside the patient's mouth.
Every typodont tooth is replaceable and independent. Therefore, the student can replace just the damaged or restored tooth without having to replace the entire set of teeth.
Regular typodont teeth mimic natural healthy teeth. Nonetheless, some models have special features, such as a portion that simulates dental caries.
Typodont teeth are easy to replace. The student or practitioner simply has to flip the typodont and look for the screws.
Every typodont tooth is held in position with a tiny screw. This screw goes through a small opening in the bottom or base of the typodont into the root portion of each tooth.
Therefore, the student just has to unscrew the restored tooth to remove it, place a new one, and screw it through the same opening.
In some typodont models, the screws at the bottom are covered by a protective soft plastic cover.
Typodont teeth are mainly used to practice restorations, such as:
● Bonding restorations: The students can learn how to perform different cavitary designs. Afterward, they can practice restoring them with composite resin.
● Crowns and bridges: The students can practice the tooth preparations for a crown or a bridge. Once they learn how to properly prepare the tooth, they can learn how to make a provisional crown.
● Waxing: Dentistry students can also learn how to wax a model on a typodont.
The dentist can also use typodont teeth to explain certain aspects of the treatment to the patient. This provides a visual representation that is easy to understand. Furthermore, it can be used to describe the proper teeth-brushing technique.
