Dental restoration materials come in several presentations. Therefore, not all of them are used in the same way. Some materials require being light-cured, while others must be mixed with different ingredients.
In the case of porcelain restorations, the practitioner can choose between different types of modalities. Nowadays, most porcelain restorations are made on a press machine. However, the traditional method involves using dental porcelain powder as the base of the material and mixing it with a liquid catalyzer.
Dental porcelain powder is a specialized material used to craft porcelain restorations. By itself, it is just a powder that contains porcelain particles and other elements. However, it becomes a moldable paste after being mixed with a liquid catalyzer.
This paste can be then used to shape the restoration on a dental model of the prepared tooth. It can also be applied directly on top of a crown's metal frame in cases of porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns.
The porcelain can be mixed with dyes to achieve the desired color.
Yet, the practitioner needs to heat it with fire to harden this porcelain paste after being shaped.
Lastly, the most common types of dental porcelain powder available are feldspathic and leucite-reinforced glass.
